As an Uber Driver, What I Saw Still Haunts Me - NoCV
I have been an Uber driver in Lagos for a while and honestly, I thought I had seen it all. From drunk passengers to people fighting in my car, nothing surprises me anymore. But there is this particular incident that has refused to leave my mind since last week. I got a request to pick a woman. When I arrived, her husband was the one that saw her off to the car. The man looked so sad, like he was almost begging her not to go. From his words, I could tell she told him she was traveling and he was sad about her leaving. She had a box with her, apparently, we were heading to the airport. But instead of any airport, I took her to a man's house. What hurt me the most was that, halfway through the trip, she didn't even have to do this, because it was not like her husband called to find out where we were. She picked up her phone and dialed her husband herself. With so much calmness, and a very innocent voice, she told him she was almost at the airport and with the time she still had left, there was no way she would miss her flight. She even told him that two weeks was nothing and she would be back before he knew it. Till today, my mind has not been free. I keep asking myself if I should mind my business and forget about it or if I should drive to her house to inform her husband about what is going on. I know it is not in my job description as an Uber driver, to interfere in my passengers marriages but each time I picture the sadness on that man’s face when he was waving his wife goodbye, I feel a heavy burden. If it were your own brother or close friend, would you want me to tell him the truth, or keep quiet?
