The Grade That Changed Everything - NoCV
There is this student of mine who was desperate to graduate that year. After my exam, the student came to my office, with so much worry and said, “I am sure I’m going to fail your course, but please is there any form of assistance you can give me? I don't need the certificate for anything. The certificate is for my dad, so I can be allowed to focus on my music career." I listened, but did not promise anything. I asked for the details, and the student left, looking both anxious and relieved. When the time came, for reasons I still don’t fully understand, I gave the student a B. The student graduated, and today is one of the biggest names in the Nigerian music industry. A while ago, the student reached out to properly say thanks, collected my account details, and now a monthly alert arrives that far exceeds the salary the school pays me. Sometimes I wonder… was it luck, compassion, or just timing that led to this? And more importantly, if bending the rules for the right reasons can change lives, where do we draw the line?
