As a Teacher, I’m Still Shocked by What I Heard at a PTA Meeting - NoCV
Honestly, sometimes as a teacher, there are things you hear during PTA meetings that if you tell people outside, they’ll think you’re lying or exaggerating. I’ve been teaching for years, and I’ve seen all sorts, but what I heard recently still shocks me. During our last PTA meeting, one parent boldly suggested that the school should increase the school fees so that children from less-privileged homes would not be able to afford it and mingle with her children. She said she didn’t want her kids associating with “those kinds of children.” The most unbelievable part was that some other parents actually agreed with her. It left me wondering, are we really losing our sense of humanity? Our school fees are already very high, and many parents already struggle to pay. Some go as far as taking loans or saving for months just to ensure their children get quality education. Yet, these other parents still want it to be increased even higher. If they don’t want their kids mixing with others, wouldn’t it be better for them to just send their children abroad? Why punish those who are genuinely trying to give their children a better life? Please, I don’t know if I’m overreacting or being unprofessional for feeling this way, but I honestly think this level of classism is disturbing. Shouldn’t good education be for every child and not just the rich? I just felt like ranting. Maybe I’m the one that doesn’t understand how things work in today’s world, but what they said that day really broke my heart.
