The Customer who owed me 30k - NoCV

I just want to share something today about a very reckless decision I once made, and how it ended up teaching me a big lesson about humanity. When I newly started my phone business, this young guy walked into my shop. He was a student of UNILORIN, and he mentioned that he was traveling back to Kwara state, Ilorin, the next day to resume school. He wanted to buy a particular phone, but when I told him the price, it turned out he was about 30,000 naira short. I advised him to go for another one within his budget, but he insisted that it was that exact model he wanted. The way he explained it, you could tell he already had his mind set on that phone. He said he didn’t realize it would cost more than the money he had on him. That was when he started pleading with me. He explained that the balance of his money was what he was supposed to use to manage himself till month end when his parents would send him more money. He begged me to allow him to take the phone with the promise that he would send me the 30k by month end. To be very honest, I don’t know what pushed me to do something that reckless. Maybe it was the excitement of being a first-time dad at the time. Maybe it was just his persistence. Or maybe it was something deep down inside me that wanted to give humanity a chance. Whatever it was, I allowed him to take the phone. He collected my number and account details, and left. But immediately after he walked out, that feeling of doubt came over me. You know that heavy feeling when you know you may have just used your own hands to cheat yourself? That was exactly what sat on my chest. I kept asking myself if I had not just acted foolishly. When I got home that day and narrated everything to my wife, she even asked me if the boy hypnotized me. I laughed and told her no, that I gave him the phone with clear eyes. Month end came, and honestly, I wasn’t expecting anything again. But to my biggest surprise, I got an alert of 30k. Not long after, my phone rang, it was him, thanking me and expressing his gratitude. I won’t even lie, I was shocked. If he had decided to disappear, there was absolutely nothing I could have done about it. Since then, that same boy has never bought a phone from anywhere else. Anytime he needs a new one, he comes straight to my shop. In fact, it looks like he is popular in school because all his friends also patronize me, and whenever they come, they always make sure to tell me that it was him who gave them my number. The reason I am sharing this story is not to encourage anyone to do what I did because honestly, it was very reckless and I doubt I will ever try it again. I am only sharing to show that sometimes, humanity can surprise you. There are still people out there who value honesty and keep to their word. So my question to this community is, have you ever done something reckless for a customer or stranger, and they ended up surprising you positively? I would love to hear similar stories, because my own taught me never to fully lose faith in people.
